Taste: The food is a mix of down-home heartiness and gourmet charm. From the appetizer menu, my date ordered the beef stew ($3.50), which was jampacked with potatoes, carrots and beef. For my entree, I chose the grilled pork chop with gravy, redskin mashed potatoes and steamed green beans ($9.99). My pork chop was flavorful and the gravy wasn't too lumpy or too thin. The mashed potatoes were creamy and definitely tasted homemade. The green beans were a bit undercooked for me, but it was good to have something crispy and light to top off this otherwise heavy meal. My date ordered meatloaf, baked macaroni and cheese and steamed green beans ($9.99). When his order came out there was only a dollop of macaroni and cheese, so the manager gave him a free side of mashed potatoes. That made his meal even better.
Service: The waitress was witty, kept our water glasses filled and gave us suggestions on what sides we should order with our meals - a valuable service, indeed.
Ambience: This quaint cafe is in the heart of the Church Hill neighborhood. Its decor commands you to slow down: Dim lights, red- painted brick walls, heavy wooden fixtures and daily specials scribbled on a chalkboard give it a homey feel. However, it's not just for the romantic. If you're looking for a happening spot, the Hill Cafe fills the bill, too.
